Fei-Fei Li Sells World Labs to AMD in .2 Billion Deal Led by Two Women

AI pioneer Dr Fei-Fei Li has sold World Labs, the startup she co-founded, to AMD for US$8.2 billion in stock, Women’s Agenda reported. Li will join AMD as an executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Dr Lisa Su.

The deal pairs a woman founder with a woman CEO in one of the biggest AI transactions of the year. Women’s Agenda notes that such deals are rare, since women capture a small share of venture funding and an even smaller share of billion-dollar deals worldwide.

What Fei-Fei Li Built at World Labs

World Labs, the company Fei-Fei Li co-founded, builds specialised “world models” used to construct 3D environments for applications in robotics, factories and scientific simulation. Li is a Stanford University researcher and computer scientist known for building the ImageNet database and the academic competitions it spawned, which earned her the nickname “godmother of AI”.

Fei-Fei Li has also spent years advocating for human-centred AI. She founded Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI, which ran the Stanford AI Lab, according to the report.

Funding for women founders remains thin across markets, from New Zealand, where women-only founders drew six percent of venture capital, to Europe, where venture funds are reshaping capital access for women founders.

Women Backing Women With Significant Money

Fei-Fei Li described Su as a friend and an early investor in World Labs in a post announcing the deal on Monday. Women’s Agenda called it “a story of women backing women with significant money.”

Su has run AMD since 2014, taking the company from near collapse to a business worth hundreds of billions. She remains one of the few women running a semiconductor giant, the report says, and has a much lower profile than Nvidia co-founder Jensen Huang.

Su told Bloomberg TV that a key part of acquiring World Labs is gaining access to the world-class talent Fei-Fei Li has brought together and combining it with AMD’s capabilities in hardware, software and systems. Li said that by joining forces with AMD, the teams are giving themselves and the ecosystem the opportunity to “accelerate the flywheel between software and hardware development.”

Why the Deal Matters for AMD and Nvidia

AMD is working to strengthen its position against competitors including Nvidia, which dominates the global chip market and is now one of the most highly valued companies in the world. Women’s Agenda describes AMD under Su as a challenger brand that can help counter concentration in AI.

The report says the World Labs deal gives AMD a chance to push harder against Nvidia, with a bet on catching up and strengthening the wider ecosystem. It also places Fei-Fei Li at the center of a major chipmaker, where decisions about what AI chips need to do are made years in advance.

That puts another woman at the center of the hardware side of the AI agenda, which Women’s Agenda describes as largely run by men and marked by safety issues the outlet has covered extensively. Networks that connect women across industries continue to grow as well, as shown by events such as the Latina Women’s Conference in Fresno.

A Rare Headline for Women in AI

Women’s Agenda wrote that it is rare to report on women leading major AI announcements and on women involved in multi-billion-dollar deals. It called the combination of both in one story “exciting and a reason for optimism,” especially as the risks of AI development have dominated recent headlines.

With Fei-Fei Li now reporting to Su as chief scientist, the two will work together as AMD pushes to challenge the dominant AI players.
