The Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC) is celebrating a remarkable milestone as its Executive Director, Kelly Hoey, has received the distinguished Social Change Award: National Impact. The honor was presented at the 32nd Annual RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards, hosted by Women of Influence+, in recognition of her groundbreaking work in education, career development, and workforce advancement across Canada.

“I am deeply honored and humbled by this recognition,” Hoey remarked. “This award underscores the entrepreneurial mindset required in the social impact sector and the importance of guiding young people toward careers that align with their passions and strengths.”

Transforming Career Development for Canadian Youth

A respected leader in career development for over 30 years, Kelly Hoey has revolutionized the way education connects with workforce demands. As the Executive Director of HIEC, she has spearheaded initiatives that have directly impacted over 250,000 young Canadians.

HIEC’s Career Lab, an innovation center she developed, offers students hands-on opportunities to explore in-demand careers, fostering clarity and confidence in their decision-making. Hoey also initiated HIEC’s first podcast, “Parents as Career Coaches,” to inspire meaningful career exploration discussions between parents and youth.

Revolutionizing Perceptions of Skilled Trades

In 1999, Hoey identified a critical gap in career education surrounding skilled trades and addressed it by launching ApprenticeSearch.com. This online platform bridges the gap between job seekers and employers in skilled trades, becoming a vital national resource. Notably, 47% of its users identify as members of equity-denied groups, advancing inclusivity within the skilled trades sector.

By providing young Canadians with clear pathways to apprenticeships, ApprenticeSearch.com continues to transform career prospects and promote diversity in workforce development across the country.

A Leader in Workforce Policy and Experiential Learning

Beyond her leadership at HIEC, Hoey has influenced national and provincial workforce and education policies. She serves as a Founding Member of the Ministry of Education Council for Experiential Learning and advises multiple organizations, including the Labour Market Information Council and the Ontario Business Education Partnership.

Her dedication to experiential learning and inclusive workforce development has solidified her reputation as a transformative figure in Canadian workforce advancement.
